A photographic exhibition by Xavier Comas
Tuesday 28th July – Sunday 30th August, 2009, Eight Thonglor

Eight Thonglor Lifestyle Retail Centre together with H Gallery – one of Asia’s leading contemporary art galleries – is presenting an exhibition of the images captured by Xavier Comas on a journey through the furthest reaches of Myanmar.
Off Limits – Trespassing in the Shan State by Spanish photographer Xavier Comas, comprises 18 photographs of the Samtao, Akha, and Eng people taken during an arduous, and clandestine journey through remote areas of the golden triangle region of Myanmar. Shot in the Wa army-controlled territory forbidden to foreigners (Special region 2 and 4), the photographer spent two weeks in April 2003 in this forbidden mountain area living with several hill tribes.
The exhibition documents hidden villages, jungle monasteries, and encounters with locals – a people who show fortitude, stoicism, and generosity in the face of great adversity. Ultimately caught, incarcerated, and interrogated for two days by Myanmar Military Intelligence, the photographer was informed that he was the first foreigner to visit the area in 30 years. Xavier was eventually released and escorted back to Kengtung for a final interrogation by the Myanma commandant chief who “invited” him to leave the Country.
The exhibition will be launched by an invitation only cocktail reception on Tuesday 28th July, 2009 from 6 – 9pm. Thereafter, Off Limits – Trespassing in the Shan State will be open to the public everyday from 10am – 10pm through Sunday 30th August 2009, on the ground floor of Eight Thonglor Lifestyle Retail Centre. The building is located at the entrance to Thonglor Soi 8 and has ample underground parking, as well as being within walking distance of Thonglor BTS.
